Brockport, NY – As college students, many are aware of what a difficult and trying time college can be. Students are forced to pick a major, whether they know what they want to do or not, and are thrown into a field they’ve never worked in before. To ease the stress, Brockport’s Career Services office offers students a helping hand.

“I sought out help from Career Services because I was a freshman in college with an undecided major,” undergraduate Brockport student Domi Washington said. “I was hoping that by going [to their office] they could help me find a job I’d enjoy and something to major in.”

Students who go to the office are also able to discover careers that deal with their major.

“I went to see what type of jobs I should look for that would best fit my degree and that I would be best qualified for,” said senior Accounting major Dana Kiselica.

Career services is described as “simple” and “helpful” by both Kiselica and Washington. Washington said she simply scheduled an appointment online and received the help she was looking for. Though you can make an appointment to guarantee you are seen by Career Services’ staff, it is not necessary.

“It was very easy. There was no wait and fast email responses,” said undergraduate student Dan Decastro.

Claudia Pietrzak, the Career Services coordinator, said they offer a “wide range” of services that students can use from when they get here to well after they graduate. Some of these services include online tools, picking a major, getting internships, first jobs, resumes, cover letters, how to dress, a professional dress closet and more.

The professional dress closet is a newer addition to the Career Services office, but Pietrzak says it helps a lot of students who can’t afford or just don’t own business clothes. In her position, Pietrzak say she often gets questions regarding how to dress for certain professional scenarios.

“Everyone always asks what the difference between business casual and business formal are,” Pietrzak said. “Then they ask me what to wear and how to act professional.”

All of the clothes in the closet are donations from staff, other professionals and more.

“We had so many more people dressed appropriately for the job fair this year than we did last year,” Pietrzak said. “I was very impressed”

The Career Services office is especially known for helping students figure out what kind of jobs to look for. According to Decastro and Kiselica, this is just what Career Services did for them.

“I wanted to learn more about what careers I can get with my major,” Decastro said. “I was left with good take away information on places to look for internships and career ideas. Everyone can benefit in at least one way from stopping by Career Services.”

According to its website, Career Services also offers services such as managing on-campus interviews, suggesting career prep events and aptitude tests. You can find the Career Services office on the Brockport campus in the Rakov center, room 101.

“These people are there to help and students should utilize the helpful advice that they will give,” Kiselica said.
