138,000 Square Feet of Opportunity

From learning to ice skate to learning how to balance chaotic college life, students at the College at Brockport have a place where they can go to do it all.

The Special Events Recreation Center, or SERC first opened its doors in 2012. The three-story building houses an ice skating rink, a pool, an indoor track, a fitness center, basketball courts, tennis courts, a group exercise room and much more.

The Field House hosts many of the college’s major events like graduation.

As one of the most popular places on campus, students spend a lot of time in the SERC.

Bailey Cross is a sophomore at the college and goes to the SERC every day. Cross is on the club baseball team and works out at the fitness center. Along with classes, practices, games and an active social life, Cross says he makes time at the SERC a priority.

“I think that your quality of life depends on what you make of it. I’d definitely say that going to the gym and staying active in sports made my quality of life better than ever before,” Cross said.

Graduating early has always been Cross’ goal and staying active helps keep him on track.

Max Riley just began working as a referee for intramural sports at the SERC. Riley is a full-time honors student and is on the men’s lacrosse team.

“I never really considered it [working at the SERC], until I heard from other employees how flexible they are about the hours I could work,” Riley said. “It’s not as demanding as having an off campus job. I like having the extra money and not having to give up lacrosse or slip up with my grades.”

Adam Lasal, the intramural sports supervisor and a SERC manager agrees.

“My sister worked here so I kind of knew what it [the job] was all about. I knew I wanted to work my way up and there was opportunity so I did. Working at the SERC helps me grow as an employee and it’ll hopefully make me more hirable for future jobs,” Lasal said.

The SERC is available to college students, community members, faculty and alumni. Membership rates vary. Anyone interested can purchase a day pass, semester pass, or annual pass. For college students, the membership is included in their bill.

When balancing the burdens that college throws their way, the students at the College at Brockport have a place to find relief, and that place is the SERC.
